Serving as one of Athens's top music venues and event spaces, Georgia Theatre has been in operation as a music venue for decades. The building itself was constructed by the YMCA of Athens in 1889, and it was then used as various facilities, including a gym, a temple and a music store. As a performance space, it opened in 1978, but in subsequent years it was used as a movie house. In 1989, it reopened as a live music venue, and it has hosted musical groups including Black Lips and the Dave Matthews Band. The concert hall experienced a major fire in 2009, after which it had to be rebuilt. Now with modern interior facilities and a funky vibe, it's a popular place for locals and visitors to see shows.
