About Godsmack

Godsmack is an American rock band from Lawrence, Massachusetts, formed in 1995 by drummer-turned-frontman Sully Erna and bassist Robbie Merrill. After one demo under the name The Scam, the group became Godsmack and worked the Boston bar circuit, where early songs Keep Away and Whatever climbed to the top of the New England charts. When Boston radio station WAAF put Keep Away into heavy rotation, the band went from selling about 50 CDs a month to more than a thousand a week, and Universal/Republic Records signed them in 1998. The self-titled debut arrived that August, entered the Billboard 200 at number 22, and eventually earned 5x platinum certification from the RIAA.

Musically, Godsmack grew out of the post-grunge and nu metal scenes of the late 1990s and settled into a hard rock and alternative metal identity, with influences that run from Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, and Black Sabbath to Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Pantera, and Rush. The chart record runs just as deep: Faceless (2003), IV (2006), and The Oracle (2010) all debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in succession, Faceless went on to sell over one million copies in the United States, and the band has stacked 25 top-ten rock radio hits with 12 reaching number one across nine studio albums.

Touring is where Godsmack built its reputation. The band played Ozzfest multiple times, toured Europe with Black Sabbath, hit the road with Metallica across America and Europe, joined Mötley Crüe on Crüe Fest, headlined the Mayhem Festival alongside Disturbed, and co-headlined a summer tour with Shinedown, all while mounting its own arena tours behind every album. Godsmack tickets have been a fixture on the North American hard rock circuit for three decades, and the sound has stayed recognizably theirs: Merrill's bulldozer bass, guitar work praised for sounding like percussion instruments, and Erna's snarl, a delivery long compared to James Hetfield's, out front.

Who are the members of Godsmack?

Sully Erna and Robbie Merrill founded Godsmack in 1995 and have been the band's constant core ever since, anchoring a lineup that held together for more than two decades.
  • Sully Erna on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. He spent more than 23 years as a drummer before stepping out front, and he played drums on Godsmack's early studio recordings.
  • Robbie Merrill on bass and backing vocals, a founding member alongside Erna since 1995.
  • Tony Rombola on lead guitar from 1996 to 2024, holding the spot for 28 years.
  • Shannon Larkin on drums and percussion from 2002 to 2024, joining the band after his run with Ugly Kid Joe.
Erna and Merrill have been the through-line across all nine Godsmack studio albums.

What are Godsmack's most popular songs?

I Stand Alone is the signature Godsmack song, a 2002 single written for The Scorpion King soundtrack that ruled rock radio as the most played active rock song of the year for 14 straight weeks. The catalog around it runs deep:
  • Keep Away and Whatever, the Boston radio hits that started it all
  • Voodoo and Bad Religion, singles from the 5x platinum debut album
  • Straight Out of Line, the Grammy-nominated lead single from Faceless
  • Bulletproof and Under Your Scars, singles from When Legends Rise (2018), with Under Your Scars reaching number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in 2019
  • Surrender, the first single from the 2023 album Lighting Up the Sky, and Unforgettable, which set a record in 2020 with five straight weeks at number one in its chart category

What awards has Godsmack won?

Godsmack's biggest win is Billboard's Rock Artist of the Year, awarded in 2001. The rest of the awards record:
  • Grammy nominations: four in all, for Vampires (Best Rock Instrumental Performance, 2001), I Stand Alone (Best Rock Song and Best Hard Rock Performance, 2003), and Straight Out of Line (Best Hard Rock Performance, 2004)
  • Billboard Awards: Rock Artist of the Year winner in 2001
  • Boston Music Awards: a home-turf haul including Act of the Year in 2000 and 2001, Rock Band of the Year in 2002, Outstanding Rock/Pop Band in 2003, and Hard Rock Act of the Year in 2006

What is Godsmack's fan culture like?

Godsmack's fanbase is inseparable from its New England roots. The band never outgrew its hometown-hero status in Boston: around the release of 1000hp in 2014, Mayor Marty Walsh declared August 6 Godsmack Day in the city. The loyalty cuts across generations, too. For the Unforgettable video in 2020, the band invited 400 middle school musicians from across New England to perform with them, and the song rode that momentum to a record five straight weeks at number one in its chart category. Godsmack fans have followed the band from Boston bar stages to arena headlining sets, and the fanbase now spans all three decades of that run.
