CONCACAF Gold Cup Group Stage background
CONCACAF Gold Cup is held every odd-numbered year. It typically lasts from mid-June to early July.
Before countries can advance to the knockout rounds of the competition, they must make their way through the group stages of the competition. The CONCACAF Gold Cup has recently been expanded to now include 16 teams in the tournament, up from 12 in previous competitions. The group stage is broken into four groups of four teams apiece. Each group is spread out across several different venues. The stadiums range from the soccer-specific stadiums that house MLS teams to large football stadiums for the matches that feature popular national teams. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stage. After group play, the tournament is single-elimination until the final game. The automatic qualifiers for the tournament are the host country and the defending champion. CONCACAF rankings determine the seeding for the tournament.

The history of the CONCACAF Gold Cup
The inaugural Gold Cup was held in 1991. This was the successor to the CONCACAF Championship, which was both a regional championship and World Cup qualifier. The Gold Cup has been at least partly played in the United States every tournament since its inception. The tournament has been won by either the United States or Mexico every time it has been held except for one competition that was won by Canada. Mexico has won the tournament seven times and the United States has won it six times. The 2017 version of the tournament was won by the United States, defeating Jamaica 2-1 in the final match.
