About Golden State Valkyries
The Golden State Valkyries are the WNBA's Bay Area expansion franchise, announced in October 2023 and on the floor for the first time in 2025. Owned by Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the same group behind the Golden State Warriors, the Valkyries became the league's first new team since the Atlanta Dream joined in 2008. The name and logo arrived on May 14, 2024, built around the Bay Bridge, whose cables double as wings and whose tower doubles as a sword. Home games are played at Chase Center in San Francisco, while the practice facility and front office sit across the bay in Oakland.
The inaugural 2025 season moved fast. Golden State debuted on May 16, 2025, and picked up its first win five days later against the Washington Mystics. By August 16 the team had set a WNBA record for most wins by an expansion club in its first season, passing the 1998 Detroit Shock, and on September 4 it became the first expansion franchise ever to reach the playoffs in year one. The Valkyries closed the regular season at 23-21 and carried the eighth seed into a first-round series against the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx, which ended their run.
Built from former role players, international standouts and rookies, the roster leaned on depth and defense rather than star power, and the Bay Area answered: all 22 home games sold out. Violet the raven, introduced as the team mascot in August 2025, became a fixture at halftime. It is a young franchise with an old-soul crowd, and the building has quickly earned a reputation as one of the louder stops on the WNBA schedule.
