About Gorillaz
Gorillaz is not a band you watch in the usual way. Formed in London in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, it is a virtual group built around four animated members: 2-D on vocals and keyboards, Murdoc Niccals on bass, Noodle on guitar and keyboards, and Russel Hobbs on drums. Their world unfolds through music videos, comic strips, interviews and short films, while the music itself stretches across alternative rock, art pop, hip-hop, electronic and trip hop. Albarn, who also fronts Blur, is the voice behind 2-D and the project's only permanent musical contributor, shaping each record around a rotating cast of guest artists.
The project arrived with the 2001 self-titled debut and the breakout single Clint Eastwood, then reached a new commercial peak with Demon Days in 2005, produced by Danger Mouse, and the single Feel Good Inc., a collaboration with De La Soul that spent eight consecutive weeks atop Billboard's alternative chart. Plastic Beach followed in 2010, Humanz in 2017 and The Now Now in 2018, before the Song Machine project produced Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez in 2020. Cracker Island arrived in 2023, and The Mountain, inspired by India, followed in 2026. Two decades in, Gorillaz tickets still promise something a conventional concert act cannot offer.
What makes a Gorillaz show distinct is how the fiction meets the stage. Early tours hid the live band behind a giant screen, the Demon Days era reduced them to silhouettes across a Manchester residency and New York's Apollo Theater, and the virtual members appeared through hologram-style projection at major award shows. Since the 2010 Escape to Plastic Beach Tour, the group has performed as a fully visible live band backed by Hewlett's visuals. Fans who follow the animated storylines, the guest features and the ever-shifting sound get a live experience that changes shape with each album cycle.
