The Tigers are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Eddie Robinson led the Grambling football team for 55 seasons between 1941 and 1997. Robinson guided his team to more than 400 victories. The Eddie Robinson Stadium was named after the head coach in 1983. In 1976, Grambling State University along with Morgan State became the first US college football teams to play a game in Asia. The Grambling State Tigers beat Morgan State with a score of 42-16. The GSU Tigers were invited to Tokyo the following fall to play against Temple University. That game was another win for GSU with a score of 35-32. Since then, the GSU Tigers have won the most Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships to date.
