Trivia
Martina McBride's smash single "Independence Day" was penned by Peters and earned the country singer a CMA award. Peters' life is all about music, so much that she is also married to her longtime musical collaborator, Barry Walsh.
Singer
Gretchen Peters, one of the great American singer-songwriters, is actually not a Southern native. She was born in the New York City suburb of Bronxville. Taking an early interest in folk and country sounds, though, she moved out to Colorado as a teenager and began performing in that state's music scene, earning rave reviews for her performing chops. After years touring and performing in Colorado, she headed out to Nashville in an attempt to establish herself as a singer-songwriter.
Breakthrough
Once Peters moved to Nashville, her career as a songwriter began to take off -- her songs were recorded by artists such as Anne Murray and George Strait. It was her composition "Independence Day" that brought her to mass attention. The gritty, emotional country song became a massive hit when Martina McBride's version was released.
With her songwriting career in bloom, she moved into recording her own music, releasing her debut The Secret of Life in 1996 and then a self-titled follow-up five years later. Since then, Peters has released five more acclaimed solo albums, including One to the Heart, One to the Head with singer-songwriter Tom Russell. She's also continued to work as a songwriter, penning tunes for Patty Loveless and Neil Diamond, among others.
Hit Albums
Gretchen Peters' songs have been recorded by many of the biggest names in popular and country music (everyone from Trisha Yearwood to Etta James to Bryan Adams), but she's also put out several acclaimed solo records. Her debut, The Secret of Life, had the hits "When You Are Old" and "The Secret of Life," as well as her version of "Independence Day." More recently, Peters has released the fan-favourite albums Northern Lights and Hello Cruel World.
