Grigory Sokolov: the makings of a legend
Born in Saint Petersburg, Sokolov began to study the piano when he was just five years old and later entered into the Leningrad Conservatory, where he would learn from celebrated pianist and pedagogue Leah Zelikhman. He continued studying at the Conservatory under the tutelage of Moisey Khalfin during his formative years and gave his first solo recital in Moscow at the age of 12. Playing works from Schumann, Rachmaninoff and Debussy amongst others, he amazed spectators at the Philharmonic Society and later showed his talent to an international audience when he claimed the gold prize at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in 1966—when Sokolov was only sixteen years old. Alongside constant studying and rehearsal on the piano, the young pianist toured around Russia, Europe, the USA and Asia during the 1960s and '70s and became well-known as one of the greatest pianists around. Experience a great
Despite a growing international reputation during the 1970s, things became difficult for Sokolov due to the Cold War and tense relations between Russia and the USA. He continued to tour within the Soviet Union but only after the fall of the Berlin Wall could he continue to tour around continental Europe, where he has become known as one of the greatest contemporary pianists along with the likes of Arcadi Volodos, Murray Perahia and Ivo Pogorelich. His recitals are pilgrimages for pianists everywhere and, as a famously disciplined and demanding performer, Sokolov released no recorded material for twenty years before the release of The Salzburg Recital in 2015—a one-hour CD which gives a summary of Sokolov’s stunning repertoire with works from Mozart, Chopin, Scriabin, Rameau, and Bach. Whether you are a student of the piano, a lover of classical music, or someone who simply wants to experience a legend in action, then buy or sell your Grigory Sokolov tickets here at StubHub today and book your place at one of his upcoming concerts.
