About Grupo Frontera

Grupo Frontera is a five-piece regional Mexican band from Edinburg, Texas. The group formed in early 2022 and spent its first months playing weddings and parties, built on norteño cumbias made for dancing. The sound pairs lead vocalist Adelaido "Payo" Solís III with accordion, bajo quinto, congas, and drums, rooted in northeastern norteño and cumbia traditions with hints of Tejano and country en español.

The breakthrough came fast. The band's debut EP, En Vivo, Vol. 1, arrived in March 2022 as a set of live covers, including Vicente Fernández's "Estos Celos." A month later, a cover of Morat's "No Se Va" went viral on TikTok and turned into a crossover hit. By December 2022, "Bebé Dame," a collaboration with Fuerza Regida, reached number one on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and became the band's first top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. In May 2023, "Un x100to" with Bad Bunny gave Grupo Frontera its first top five hit on the Hot 100, and the band announced a 23-date tour to follow. Billboard has pointed to the band's success as integral to the breakthrough of regional Mexican music as a whole.

The catalog shows real range. Debut album El Comienzo, released in August 2023, leaned into the norteño cumbias that made the band famous while reaching into other regional Mexican styles, and climbed to number 34 on the Billboard 200. The follow-up, Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada, arrived in May 2024 and folded country, R&B, electronic, and bachata into the mix, with guest spots from Christian Nodal, Maluma, Morat, and Nicki Nicole. Along the way, Grupo Frontera built a collaboration list that crosses genres, sharing songs with Bad Bunny, Shakira, Peso Pluma, Carín León, Grupo Firme, and Fuerza Regida. That run of hits is what put Grupo Frontera tickets in demand across the United States and Mexico, with the band touring behind El Comienzo in 2023.

Who are the members of Grupo Frontera?

Grupo Frontera performs as a five-piece, with each member handling a distinct role in the band's sound.
  • Adelaido "Payo" Solís III: lead vocalist and the voice out front on the band's biggest hits.
  • Juan Javier Cantú: accordionist and backing vocalist.
  • Julian Peña Jr.: congas player, holding down the percussion behind the cumbia grooves.
  • Alberto "Beto" Acosta: bajo quinto player, anchoring the low end of the band's regional Mexican sound.
  • Carlos Guerrero: drummer, driving the rhythm from the back.
That instrumentation, accordion and bajo quinto up front with congas and drums behind, is the engine of the band's signature norteño cumbia sound.

What are Grupo Frontera's most popular songs?

Grupo Frontera's most popular songs span viral covers, chart-topping collaborations, and original cumbias.
  • "No Se Va," the Morat cover that went viral on TikTok and introduced the band to a mass audience.
  • "Bebé Dame" with Fuerza Regida, the band's first number one on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and its first top 40 hit on the Hot 100.
  • "Un x100to" with Bad Bunny, which reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023.
  • "Que Vuelvas" with Carín León, which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned multi-platinum certification in the United States.
  • "Tulum" with Peso Pluma, a hit that also appeared on Peso Pluma's album Génesis.
  • "El Amor de Su Vida" with Grupo Firme, which won the Latin Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Song.
  • "(Entre Paréntesis)" with Shakira, which earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Song of the Year.
From a viral cover to collaborations with Bad Bunny and Shakira, that catalog tracks Grupo Frontera's rise from Edinburg to the Billboard charts.

What awards has Grupo Frontera won?

Grupo Frontera has won three Latin Grammy Awards, including back-to-back wins for Best Regional Mexican Song.
  • Latin Grammy Awards: Best Regional Mexican Song for "Un x100to" with Bad Bunny (2023) and "El Amor de Su Vida" with Grupo Firme (2024), plus Best Norteño Album for El Comienzo (2024), along with Song of the Year nominations in 2023 and 2024.
  • Billboard Latin Music Awards: Duo/Group Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year (2023).
  • Premio Lo Nuestro: Regional Mexican Group or Duo of the Year and Regional Mexican New Artist of the Year (2024), with further Mexican Music wins in 2025 and 2026.

  • iHeartRadio Music Awards: Regional Mexican Song of the Year for "Alch Si" with Carín León (2025) and Regional Mexican Artist of the Year (2026).
Not bad for a band that was playing weddings and parties in Edinburg a few months before its first release.
