The history of Guana Batz
The group was founded in 1982 by Pip Hancox, Stuart Osborne, Mick Wigfall and Dave "Diddle" Turner. Wigfall was replaced by bass guitar player Mick White but eventually the band returned to performing with an upright bass with the arrival of Sam Sardi. They were a part of a wave of British psychobilly in the 1980s that sprang up after The Cramps became popular in the USA and, along with bands such as The Meteors, The Stingrays and The Caravans, they became regulars at the legendary London venue Klub Foot. They grew their reputation as key players in the psychobilly scene at Klub Foot and released their debut EP in 1983 with "You’re So Fine" on Big Beat Records, followed by "The Cave" in 1984. In 1985, their debut album "Held Down to Vinyl... At Last" peaked at number one in the UK indie charts, a sign of how the band had become established in the British underground scene. Legends of Klub Foot
By fusing the rockabilly sound with the raw energy of punk rock, Guana Batz are prime examples of psychobilly and icons and its propagation outside the USA. Their later albums, such as "Loan Sharks" (1986), "Live Over London" (1987) and "Rough Edges" (1988), established the band's iconic status as they continued to tour around the UK and internationally. Thecrole of fifth member in the band has often jokingly been assigned to the band members' pet dogs, beginning with Hancox’s Pig Dog and Muttley. After members of the band moved to the USA, where they play with former members of the Stray Cats, Batz became less active in the 1990s, ending with the compilation album "The Very Best of the Guana Batz" in 2001. However, after a hiatus that lasted more than a decade, the band returned with the "Burning Up" EP in 2017, followed by "Back To The Jungle" in 2018, showing that the Batz are just as innovative and energetic as ever with highlight gigs at venues such as The Fleece Bristol.
