Gulf Coast Showcase Women's Basketball History
This is the first year that the Gulf Coast Showcase will be held with a women's basketball tournament included. Last season was the inaugural Gulf Coast Showcase but it only featured a men's side and Louisiana Tech emerged victorious. The tournament was such a big hit that this season it expanded to include a women's field which should be just as big of a hit as the men's tournament was last year, especially with the teams chosen to participate.
The Teams
The Gulf Coast Showcase is in its second year but this is the first year that it will have a field of women's teams and the teams involved on the women's side are among the best in all of college basketball including the UCONN Huskies who are one of the best college basketball programs of all time regardless of gender. The UConn Huskies women's basketball team has been one of the most successful college sports teams in the past twenty years, regardless of gender. With such famous former players as Diana Taurasi and Rebecca Lobo, the Huskies have gained a reputation for being a program where excellence is expected. After setting a college basketball record of consecutive victories, surpassing even the legendary John Wooden UCLA teams, the Huskies have never looked back and continue to show their dominance in college hoops. Always a highly rated team and a contender for the national title, UCONN consistently reloads their roster and has one of the most talented squads in all of college basketball. Teams like Vanderbilt, Villanova, Minnesota, and Georgia Tech have all been some of the most dominant teams in their conferences and are constantly poised to make big runs in the NCAA Tournament. Green Bay, the College of Charleston, and Arizona State are all up and coming women's college basketball programs who will undoubtedly relish their chance to take on some of the sport's traditional powerhouses. The Gulf Coast Showcase offers unbelievable match ups and should prove to be one of the most fascinating college basketball tournaments of the season.
