The couples central to the musical plot
Orpheus and Eurydice are the two star-crossed lovers at the centre of this tale: both are victims of the economic catastrophe that has affected the country and while Orpheus is optimistic that he can provide a life for Eurydice if they get married, she is sceptical of him and her chances of obtaining any sort of financial or social stability. Nevertheless, she falls in love with him and the pair commit themselves to each other. Hadestown London joins Dreamgirls London, Billy Elliot London and 42nd Street London as other musicals performed in London. The other couple central to the story are Hades and Persephone and their relationship provides a counterpoint and context to the other. Hades is the master of the industrial Hadestown, a factory below the surface where Persephone must live with him for six months of the year. When she tires of her life there, Hades searches for someone more amenable and finds Eurydice whom he persuades to join him with promises of the stability she desperately desires. Orpheus travels to Hadestown in order to get her back and just when all seems well, Fate intervenes and tragedy unfolds. Hadestown London tickets are available now for purchase or sale via StubHub.
Hadestown London is a jazzy, pop-infused musical
Anais Mitchell who wrote the book from which the musical was adapted is also responsible for the score and lyrics and has written several original songs that London audiences are sure to enjoy such as the opening number by Hermes "Road to Hell" which aptly sets the table for all that's to follow and spectators will surely soak up "Why We Build the Wall" performed by Hades and his worker gang. "Way Down Hadestown" and "When the Chips are Down" are other memorable songs from this rollicking musical whose score as well as it's set design is a clear homage to New Orleans and its unique folk, jazz and gospel musical heritage. London audiences can expect stellar performances from the entire cast and the band definitely deserves its own curtain call for outstanding playing while the choreography is tight and impressive.
