Hadestown is a folk-rock opera made for our times. A modern adaptation of two Greek myths, it tells the story of Orpheus, who must journey to the Underworld and bargain with Hades, the god of the dead, for the life of his lover named Eurydice. Set in a bleak and desolate world, the musical features creative industrial sets and modern folk music. Hadestown took a long and circuitous route to Broadway, making it an unlikely and well-deserving success story.
Way Down Hadestown
Hadestown features music, lyrics and a book by the Americana and folk singer named Anais Mitchell. The idea for Hadestown began as a small theater project staged in venues throughout Vermont in 2006. After the end of the initial run, Mitchell continued to experiment with the basic idea and released a concept album for the musical in 2010. With the goal of developing the project into a full musical, Mitchell collaborated with director Rachel Chavkin. Together they added new songs and dialogue to flesh out the concept. In 2016, a full decade after the original project, Hadestown went through a workshop in New York. Due to the popularity of the workshop, productions sprung up in Edmonton and London. Hadestown finally made its Broadway debut at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17th, 2019. The production made significant waves at the 2019 Tony Awards. Out of 14 total nominations, Hadestown took home eight awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role and numerous technical awards. It was also honored by the Drama Desk Awards, the Drama League Awards, the Outer Critics Circle Awards and more.
