Hamilton Portland tickets
An award-winning musical that consistently sells out venues of all sizes, Hamilton Portland combines hip hop, history and politics to great effect. The musical boasts a uniquely diverse cast, with minority actors portraying the Founding Fathers and their loved ones. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the musical's book and the lyrics. He also played the lead role of Alexander Hamilton. Since its debut, Hamilton has enjoyed a successful run on Broadway and a nationwide tour.
Hamilton Portland's inspiration
Ron Chernow's biography Alexander Hamilton, the book that famously won the first ever George Washington Book Prize, served as the inspiration for Hamilton. The original biography enjoyed a long tenure on The New York Times' bestseller list. Its chief goal was to provide a more comprehensive take on the life of one of America's most influential yet frequently forgotten Founding Fathers. Chernow was later the historical consultant for the musical version of his biography.
Hamilton Portland's storyline
Hamilton begins with a quick summary of Alexander Hamilton's early life and then delves into his initial interactions with Aaron Burr and a group of revolutionaries. He accepts an opportunity from General George Washington and repeatedly petitions for further command. The musical continues to follow both his family and professional lives, the accomplishments (and jealousy) of Burr, and ultimately, Hamilton's fall from grace. It ends with his death by duel, and a reminder that politicians have little control over how they will be viewed in a historical context.
Hamilton Portland's live experience
Hamilton offers an immersive and undeniably emotional experience. Audience members are immediately drawn in by the title number "Alexander Hamilton," which introduces the musical's unique style. Costuming is simple and there are few special effects; the focus is entirely on performance quality and the extraordinary story of America's Founding Fathers. The cast clearly captures the intensity and turmoil of the time, subtly (but effectively) connecting it to the current division that dominates the political landscape. Audience members tap their toes to the catchy hip hop music, but they also walk away with a better understanding of America's early days as a nation.
Hamilton Portland's awards
Hamilton was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, ultimately earning 11. It also earned the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and even the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Additional distinctions include the Fred and Adele Astaire Award for Best Choreographer, the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for a Drama Inspired by American History and numerous Broadway.com Audience Awards.
