Happyness Tickets
An alt rock band that was formed in 2013, Happyness is a three-piece group. The ensemble consists of Jonny Allan, who sings, plays the guitar and the bass, Benji Compston, a singer guitarist, and Ash Cooper, the band's drummer. The group write their own material as a trio and occasionally swap around their instruments when working in the studio environment. Many of their tracks have an American college rock band feel about them, although others are distinctly British in their outlook. For some shows, the band employ a fourth member, Paul Abderrahim.
Happyness' career milestones
After getting together, Happyness played their first gig in November 2013. Their first recording was put out just one month later. Entitled Happyness, the EP was made available in a CD format as well as for digital download. The group self-released their debut album the following summer on their own label. Weird Little Birthday came out in June 2014. It was warmly received and mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Pavement and Sparklehorse by the British music press. The album was mixed by Adam Lasus, famed for his work with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! Its soundscape featured plenty of crunching overdriven guitars but also had a soft tonal quality that was distinctly lo-fi. It spawned two singles, “Great Minds Think Alike, All Brains Taste The Same”, which was followed by “Anything I Do Is All Right”.
In 2015, Weird Little Birthday was reissued by Moshi Moshi Records in the UK and was put out by Bar None Records in the US, an act that breathed new life into the project. These versions of the LP had extra material added to them in the form of bonus tracks. That year, the group won NME's Best New Lyric prize for a line in their song “Montreal Rock Band Somewhere”.
A new EP followed in 2016, called Tunnel Vision on Your Part. Happyness then released a second studio album, Write In. The guitars on this work were even fuzzier and more ethereal than on their earlier work. The track “Bigger Glass Less Full” is notable for the amount of power the band is able to project in their recorded work.
Happyness' live work
Although they headline their own shows, much of the band's live work has come about through high-profile support slots. They have opened gigs for the likes of The Dandy Warhols in the US, for example. They've also played support sets for Suede and Speedy Ortiz, among others. Happyness is well known on the festival circuit and the members have performed at Bestival, the Green Man Festival and Reading before.
