Hangary Capitol Theatre - Downtown Movie Theatre and Live Entertainment

Located in downtown Macon, the Hangary Capitol Theatre is a historic building housing a movie theater and live entertainment venue. With regular film screenings and live concerts, there's something for everyone here.

Hangary Capitol Theatre History

The building that would eventually host the Hangary Capitol Theatre was erected in 1897 to hold Commercial Savings and Loan, although it was actually the Strong Shoe Company that would occupy the building between 1900 and 1916. The space was converted to a movie theater on November 10, 1916 and equipped with leather chairs and a screen made of gold fiber to prevent flickering. The theater closed in 1975 and stood for the most part abandoned for three decades until Tony Long gathered the funds and support to revitalize it and reopen it as Cox Capitol Theatre in 2006.

Hangary Capitol Theatre Events

The Hangary Capitol Theatre hosts a variety of events, ranging from second-run film screenings and film festivals to live concert performances. Past appearances have been made by Blues Traveler, City and Colour, Abbey Road LIVE!, Gregg Allman, the Dave Rawlings Machine, the Indigo Girls, CeeLo Green, Sister Hazel and many others. The Macon Pops and other local acts make frequent appearances at the Hangary Capitol Theatre.

Hangary Capitol Theatre Seating Layout

The Hangary Capitol Theatre's seating layout can accommodate up to 650 patrons. The majority of these seats are located on an open first floor, with 297 additional seats located on the balcony level. Depending on the scheduled event, events are ticketed as general admission only or with some combination of seating available.

Macon, Georgia

Macon is known as the "Heart of Georgia" due to its position at the state's geographic center. The Ocmulgee National Monument is another interesting place to visit. Here, prehistoric Native American earthen structures are preserved to fascinate visitors today.

When you think of cherry blossoms, you may think of D.C. or Japan first, but with more than 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees dotting the city streets, Macon has truly earned its title as the "Cherry Blossom Capital of the World." Between late March and mid-April, the city hosts its annual Cherry Blossom Festival, featuring a variety of special events.
