Harry Edward Styles was born on 1 February 1994 in Redditch, Worcestershire, England, and grew up in the village of Holmes Chapel in Cheshire. He got his start singing covers on a karaoke machine as a child and led a local band called White Eskimo that won a Battle of the Bands competition during his school years. In 2010, at age 16, Styles auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor as a solo contestant. After being eliminated from the solo category, he was grouped with Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik to form One Direction. Styles suggested the band's name, and the group went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, moving over 70 million records worldwide before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Styles launched his solo career in 2017 with a self-titled debut album released through his own label, Erskine Records, and Columbia Records. The album debuted at number one in the UK, the US, and Australia, led by the single "Sign of the Times," which topped the UK Singles Chart and drew comparisons to the work of David Bowie. His second album, Fine Line (2019), broke the record for biggest first-week sales by an English male artist in the US, and its single "Watermelon Sugar" became his first US number-one hit. Harry's House (2022) continued that trajectory, debuting atop charts in over fifteen countries. Its lead single, "As It Was," spent 15 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the fourth-longest-running number-one in the chart's history and IFPI's best-selling global single of 2022. His fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. (2026), featured the global number-one singles "Aperture" and "American Girls."
Styles tours as a rock artist with a full backing band, delivering shows that critics have compared to 1970s rock festivals rather than typical arena pop concerts. His stage presence has drawn comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger, and his Love On Tour (2021 to 2023) concluded as one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time, earning $617.3 million. During that run, Styles performed 15 sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, becoming only the third musical artist in history to have a permanent banner raised inside the venue. He also headlined Coachella in 2022 to a crowd of over 100,000. Harry Styles tickets consistently draw one of the most devoted and expressive fanbases in live music.
