They lost the game, but in the years since, the Crimson have built an incredible winning tradition. It started early, in 1903, when Harvard had a 22-game winning streak, defeating teams like MIT and Yale multiple times. By 1962, Harvard Crimson hockey racked up over 500 total wins. The Harvard Crimson's modern hockey history really starts when Bill Cleary started as head coach in 1971. By 1977, Cleary helped the Crimson amass 100 wins. He led the Crimson to the NCAA championship in 1988-89 in his penultimate season as head coach. Today, the Ivy League regular-season champion wins a trophy named after him. These days, Harvard's program continues to make waves in the ECAC and NCAA tournaments. The Harvard Crimson made it to the regional semifinals in 2018-19 before being eliminated by UMASS. The Harvard Crimson and the Yale Bulldogs have been facing off against one another since 1900. Since 2014, these schools have been meeting in New York City for the Rivalry on Ice, which is played at the famed Madison Square Garden. During the 2020 edition of the game, Harvard shut Yale out with a score of 7-0. This included Crimson player Jack Drury's first-ever NCAA hat trick. Harvard also has a notable rivalry with Cornell. In 1990, Cornell eliminated Harvard from the ECAC playoffs, and an angry Cleary told the Crimson not to shake Big Red's hands. Cornell took this personally, and Big Red players have refused to touch the Cleary trophy after winning it in the years since.
