The 2017 Broadway Revival received Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical to Bette Midler. Who Said No to Hello, Dolly!

When Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart created Hello, Dolly!, they didnÕt have Carol Channing in mind. In fact, they envisioned Ethel Merman as Dolly Levi, and they wrote the part for her. Merman turned down the role, so David Merrick approached Mary Martin. She also said no. Merrick had Nancy Walker audition for the role, but he didn't cast her and went on to hire Carol Channing. Now, itÕs impossible to think of Dolly Levi without thinking of Carol Channing. Gower Champion almost missed out on his Tony Awards for Hello, Dolly!, but Hal Prince, Jerome Robbins, Joe Layton and others said no to directing the musical.
