Holy Cross Crusaders Basketball TicketsHoly Cross played a few basketball games under Fred Powers in the early 1900s, but serious play started under Moose Krause in his coaching tenure from 1939-1942. Coach Alvin "Doggie" Julian brought the Crusaders to national prominence from 1945-1948 when he led the team to a 65-10 record, two NCAA Tournament appearances and the team's only National Championship. Head coach Ralph Willard had the most recent success with the Crusaders from 1999-2009. His team posted a 192-117 record, won four conference titles and played four times in the NCAA Tournament. The Crusaders have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 13 times, the Sweet Sixteen once and the Final Four twice. The Holy Cross team has played in the National Invitation Tournament 12 times. Eight of the Holy Cross Crusaders have been named to the AP All-American team. In 2007, Keith Simmons became the fifth Crusader named Patriot League Player of the Year. Ron Perry is the only Holy Cross player to be named America East Player of the Year. Ten Crusaders have played in the NBA, many for the Boston Celtics. The Hart Center Arena was renovated in 2016 and seats 3,536 fans, but it often accommodates standing-room crowds of as many as 4,000. Women’s basketball and Holy Cross volleyball teams also play at Hart Center. The center is named for Reverand Francis J. Hart, who created the Holy Cross intramural program and served as its director for more than 40 years.

Originally benched by head coach Doggie Julian for showboating, Cousy made his college basketball name in a tight game against Loyola of Chicago. At Holy Cross, Cousy led the team to 26 straight wins his senior year and a second-place finish at the National Invitation Tournament. He was a three-time All-American and went on to earn 13 NBA Championship rings with the Boston Celtics. Tommy Heinsohn, class of 1956, was the Crusader’s best rebounder of all time. In his senior year, he averaged 27.4 points and 21.1 rebounds per game. Ronnie Perry, class of 1980, is the all-time leading scorer for the Crusaders.
