Houston Dynamo History
Though the Houston Dynamo began as an MLS expansion team in 2006, the franchise actually dates back all the way to 1994 as the San Jose Clash. They became the San Jose Earthquakes in 1996 as one of the charter members of the newly formed MLS, or Major League Soccer. The Earthquakes defeated DC United in the first ever MLS game, ushering in a new era of American professional soccer that has proven to take hold in a nation ruled by American football. Though the Earthquakes were successful and popular in the Bay Area, the owners were determined to get a new state of the art stadium for the team and over the years it looked like it was not meant to be. Without a new stadium, the owners decided to sell the franchise, and the entire coaching staff and team were moved to Houston, where they cut ties with their 11 year history as the San Jose Earthquakes, becoming the Houston Dynamo, an expansion team starting from scratch. The Dynamo introduced themselves to league in an impressive fashion by winning the MLS Cup in the franchise's first two seasons, in 2006 and 2007. They seem to come close to winning it all every season, but the Dynamo are looking to win their third MLS Cup this season, so get out and support your home team this playoff season.
