The Houston Texans are the youngest franchise in the NFL, born when the league awarded Houston its 32nd team on October 6, 1999. The Texans began play in 2002 as an expansion team and made an immediate statement, beating the Dallas Cowboys in their inaugural game to become the first expansion club to win its opener since the 1961 Minnesota Vikings. The first AFC South title and first playoff berth arrived in 2011, and seven more division championships followed between 2012 and 2024. In 2023, the Texans became the first team in NFL history to win a division with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback, with DeMeco Ryans and C.J. Stroud at the controls. Houston Texans tickets at Reliant Stadium come with a game-day culture that is all Houston's own.
The Texans exist because Houston refused to stay without pro football. The Houston Oilers left for Tennessee in 1996 and eventually became the Tennessee Titans, and entrepreneur Bob McNair led the bid that brought the NFL back for a $700 million expansion fee. The name arrived in September 2000 after a research process that drew more than 65,000 survey responses, with Texans chosen over finalists Apollos, Bobcats, Stallions, and Wildcatters. The identity leans into the state: deep steel blue, battle red, and liberty white uniforms, and a logo of a bull's head shaped like the Texas flag with a lone star for its eye. The bull theme runs everywhere, from Toro the mascot to the Bulls on Parade nickname the team adopted from the Rage Against the Machine song in the 2010s.
Texans game days start well before kickoff. Tailgaters spread across the stadium lots with the purple lot standing out for the most barbecue for sale anywhere on the grounds, and the Blue Crew tailgate in the northwest corner of the Platinum Lot raises the Bull Pen Toast about 90 minutes before every home game. Inside, the sections behind the north end zone form the Bull Pen, where the team's most avid fans hold up giant Texans jerseys while the visiting lineup is announced and turn their backs after an opponent scores. A 45-member Bull Pen Pep Band performs at every home game, and division battles against the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, and Jacksonville Jaguars carry an edge that only annual familiarity builds. Those AFC South rivalry games are usually the most in-demand Texans tickets of the season.
