In 1907, the house then became the clubhouse of the Des Moines Women's Club. With rising membership, the Women's Club decided to add on to the house and built a theater space in 1923. At the time, the theater had a seat for every member, which then added up to 1,400. A number of famous people visited Hoyt Sherman Place, including Will Rogers and Amelia Earhart.
