Located in the historic Sherman Hill area of Des Moines, Iowa, Hoyt Sherman Place was originally home to the businessman Hoyt Sherman. In 1907, the house then became the clubhouse of the Des Moines Women's Club. With rising membership, the Women's Club decided to add on to the house and built a theater space in 1923. At the time, the theater had a seat for every member, which then added up to 1,400. A number of famous people visited Hoyt Sherman Place, including Will Rogers and Amelia Earhart. Today, Hoyt Sherman Place is the hub for art and music in the Des Moines area, including such performers as George Thorogood and Melissa Etheridge.
