Hy-Vee Big Four Classic TicketsBasketball is a sport taken seriously throughout the Midwest, and the state of Iowa is no exception. Any fan of men’s college basketball in Iowa remembers the Hy-Vee Big Four Basketball Classic fondly. Started in 1979 as a round-robin tournament, the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic showcased the four Iowa D-I schools facing off against each other. The teams that competed included Iowa, Iowa State, Drake and Northern Iowa. The Hy-Vee Big Four Classic, which was later called the Hy-Vee Classic, was a two-day event held every December. The tournament enjoyed good ticket sales as basketball fans from across the region filled the Wells Fargo Arena’s 17,000 seats in the Iowa Events Center complex. In spite of good ticket sales, however, the tournament was canceled to allow the respective college teams the chance to play more home games. If the event is revived, you could get Hy-Vee Big Four Basketball Classic tickets at StubHub.

When was the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic tournament canceled? In June 2018, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes announced that it would exercise the right to stop playing in the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic. Many sports fans enjoyed watching the top four Division I teams play each other in nonconference play with the added advantage of being able to have the tournament in a neutral location that was away from any university campus.
Why was the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic tournament canceled?Since the University of Iowa is a part of the Big Ten and Iowa State University is a member of the Big 12, basketball fans looked forward to seeing these two in-state rivals play each other in a nonconference matchup. In contrast, the University of Northern Iowa Panthers and the Drake University Bulldogs are both members of the Missouri Valley Conference. As a result, UNI and Drake didn’t play each other in the Hy-Vee Big Four. While ticket sales for the tournament remained high, many sports fans felt the tourney’s excitement level never matched the supercharged energy that happens when the teams play each other in home games. Participation in the Hy-Vee Big Four Classic was "costing" the respective teams a home game in their seasons. In June 2018, the University of Iowa athletic director Gary Varta announced that because the team had reached 22 season games in-conference, it would exit the Hy-Vee Classic.
How can I watch the teams from Hy-Vee Big Four Classic tournament now?The University of Iowa Hawkeyes team has been a men’s college basketball powerhouse in the Big Ten for years. Still, it’s important to remember that the Iowa State Cyclones team has been dominating in the Big 12 in recent years. During 2019 March Madness, the Iowa State Cyclones defeated Kansas to claim the fourth conference title in six years.
