ICT Roller Girls Event Info
With events going down all over the world, roller derby has become very popular over the last decade as audiences show up to see these incredible athletes in action. Although the modern movement is credited with starting in Austin, Texas, many other leagues have started up since 2006, including the ICT Roller Girls organization based in Wichita. Popularity around the sport has also been on the rise in particular following the release of 2009 indie "Whip It," a comedy/drama starring Ellen Page (directed by Drew Barrymore) which brought a new level of exposure to the nascent modern sport. Combining both amateurs and more seasoned professionals, roller derbies tend to be completely unpredictable and have grown substantially as a unique spectator sport in recent years.
ICT Roller Girls History
The roller derby has been a celebrated niche sport in the United States for a very long time at this point, as it really started making waves in the 1930s and was broadcast on the radio by 1939. Over the generations that followed, roller derbies began popping up in a variety of different formats, which eventually led to the ICT Roller Girls coming together as an organization for the first time in 2006. What started as fairly small competition soon grew substantially to the point that it began drawing more than 40 skaters just a few years after its founding. At this point, ICT Roller Girls tickets are as popular as they've ever been as the word continues to spread about the exciting and unique events that take over the rink at the Cotillion in Wichita.
