The Idaho State Bengals was independent between 1902 and 1949 and again from 1961 to 1962. In between that time, the team was a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Since 1964, the Idaho State Bengals has been a member of the Big Sky Conference. Idaho State had rivalries with Boise State University and the University of Idaho for quite some time while all three schools were a part of the Big Sky Conference. In 1996, Boise State University and University of Idaho both went to Big West Conference and moved up to Division I-A. Since the teams played one another so infrequently, Idaho State dropped the rivalry. ISU's main football rivals are now the Weber State Wildcats, the Montana Grizzlies and the Idaho Vandals.
