Since then, the Illinois-Chicago Flames basketball team has appeared three times in the NCAA Tournament, once in the NIT, once in the CBI and twice in the CIT. Currently, under the coaching of Steve McClain, the Flames hold one conference title from both the Horizon League and the Summit League Regular Season Championships as well as two Horizon League Tournament championship titles. Steve McClain became the Illinois-Chicago Flames basketball head coach in 2015. The Flames only won five games in his first season coaching, but the squad made it all the way to the CBI finals by the end of his second year. Formerly, he served as head coach for the Wyoming Cowboys and as associate head coach and assistant coach for the Indiana Hoosiers. There are quite a few UIC Hall of Famers from the Flames basketball program, including Daryl Rice, Bill Merchantz and Gregory Olsen. Daryl Rice is known for giving 100% for every game and was an integral part of the transition from Division II to Division I. Bill Merchantz was the first person to receive an athletic scholarship to UIC, and he set a record for making 36 consecutive free throws. That record stood for 20 years. For four seasons, Gregory Olsen started every game, and by the time he left UIC, he was a career scoring leader with 1,629 points.
