Since 1985, singer-songwriter Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have been commonly known as the musical duo the Indigo Girls. Saliers and Ray went to elementary school together but did not start performing together until high school. In 1985, the folk-rock duo released their first self published single, "Crazy Game." Later that year they went on to release the self-titled EP Indigo Girls. The group was signed by Epic Records in 1987, who had already seen success with other folk-rock female artists like Tracy Chapman. By 1990, Saliers and Ray had secured the Grammy for Best Contemporary folk album. For thirty years, the Indigo Girls have been seamlessly blending folk and rock to create their own unique sound. They are best known for the songs "Closer to Fine," "Galileo, and the crossover alternative hit Shame on You. Indigo Girls left Epic Records in 2006 to sign with Hollywood Records," but ultimately it didn't work out, and the duo returned to their roots of self-producing, launching IG recordings in 2008. The Indigo Girls have released a total of 14 albums, 10 of which are studio albums and the other four independent releases.
Indigo Girls are very well known in the LGBTQ/IA+ community and are iconic for their activism both on and offstage. In 2007, the duo launched their True Colors tour, the proceeds of which went to the Human Rights Campaign and other pro-LGBTQ/IA+ organizations. They have also not been shy about their support of transgender rights, at times even directly criticizing the LGBTQ/IA+ community for its treatment of transgender persons. In addition to gay rights, the Indigo Girls support green sustainability. They partnered with activist Winona LaDuke to found the 501 (c)3 Honor the Earth. Saliers and Ray are also advocates for prison abolition and the rights of First Nations people.
