Indy Star Indiana vs. Kentucky High School All-Stars TicketsThe Indy Star Indiana vs. Kentucky High School All-Star game is an annual competition between the very best high school juniors and seniors in the two states. Featuring future basketball prospects, the teams play back-to-back games in the states of Indiana and Kentucky. The games are intended purely for fun and bragging rights. The series originally began in 1940 as a one-game match-up between Indiana and Kentucky and, with the exception of a short break for World War 2, has been played every year since. The current format of back-to-back games was instituted in 1953. For most of its history, the Indianapolis Star had organized and run the series by itself. However, in 2012, the newspaper contracted with the IBCA, or the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, to operate the Indiana games. The games have featured plenty of all-time greats, including Wes Unseld, Jack "Goose" Givens, Darrell Griffith, Allan Houston and Rick Mount. How are the rosters chosen?Players must be selected by the team — usually a coach or director in consultation with other experts — to participate in the all-star game. The Kentucky team has a try-out phase, but the team composition is entirely up to the individual discretion of the experts. The best senior players from each state, known as Mr. or Miss Basketball, receive an automatic invitation to the all-star team. They are given the honor of wearing the No. 1 jersey during the game. Both the juniors and seniors have their own separate teams.
When does the series take place? The All-Star Game takes place sometime in the summer, typically over a week-long span in early June. In the days leading up to the main event, the boys and girls junior all-star teams play a series of games at various high schools around the region. This is followed by the main event, the senior all-star game, which is played in back-to-back days at Knights Hall and Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Both the boys and girls teams play on the same day sometimes around the evening or night.
Who was the winner of the last series? In the 2019 All-Star Game, Indiana beat Kentucky in back-to-back blowouts: 97-64 in Louisville and 120-74 in Indianapolis. It was the first time in the history of the series that one team won both games by more than 30 points. The 120-74 win was also the second-highest margin of victory in the series, ranking only below Indiana’s 54-point victory in 2013. The games featured Trayce Jackson-Davis of Center Grove, the 2019 Indiana Mr. Basketball, who scored 16 points in the first game and 17 points in the second.
What are the venues like?Knights Hall, which is the home of the Bellarmine University Knights, has a seating capacity of around 2,196 spectators, including chair-backed seating in the courtside, mezzanine and terrace levels. Bankers Life Fieldhouse, which is the home of the Indiana Pacers from the NBA, has a much larger capacity of around 18,500 seats for basketball games, though only part of the arena may be used.
