International Champions Cup TicketsThe International Champions Cup is an annual tournament that brings together the best clubs in the world playing soccer, also known as association football. Organized by Stephen M. Ross and Relevent Sports, the event was founded in 2013 as a replacement for the World Football Challenge. The inaugural event took place across six US cities and one European location. In subsequent years, the International Champions Cup expanded to sites in Canada, Australia, China and Singapore. It also added a women’s tournament in 2018, as well as boys' and girls' futures tournaments to showcase up-and-coming players. Throughout its history, the tournament has hosted some of the largest association football games in America. A 2014 match between Real Madrid and Manchester United at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor broke the record for the largest US soccer crowd with 109,318 spectators. How many teams participate in the event? The number of participating teams varies from year to year, depending on who is available to play. On the men’s side, the International Champions Cup initially involved only eight teams. This expanded to 18 teams by 2018. However, the 2019 event only featured 12 teams. European clubs are the most-represented because the tournament serves as a kind of preseason for the continent. In 2019, only four women's teams participated.
What is the format of the tournament? The format of the International Champions Cup differs between the men’s and women’s sides. The women’s side features a two-round single-elimination tournament. The first round begins with a semifinals match. The losers play in the third-place game, while the winners advance to the one-game championship. The men’s side, on the other hand, features a round robin format with only a single table. Each team plays three games against various opponents. They receive three points for a win, two points for a penalty kick win, one point for a penalty kick loss and no points for a regulation loss. The team with the most points at the end of three games is crowned the winner. Tie-breakers are determined by head-to-head matchups, followed by goal difference, goals for, goals conceded, etc. The futures tournament has an entirely different format. It starts out with group matches, proceeds to the quarterfinals or semifinals and wraps up with a final match. All games adhere to standard FIFA rules.
Why is soccer also called football? The sport called soccer in the United States — as well as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa — is known as association football in many other countries. The name "soccer" started as slang, borrowing the "soc" from "association." Both soccer and gridiron football evolved from earlier sports enjoyed in upper-class English schools in the early 1800s. When the sport first crossed the Atlantic to gain popularity in America, its rules differed from place to place. When they were standardized, the gridiron game became known as football, while the British version was dubbed soccer.
Who was the champion of the previous International Champions Cup?On the men’s side, Benfica from Lisbon, Portugal, emerged triumphant with 9 points and a perfect 3-0 record. On the women’s side, Olympique Lyonnais beat the North Carolina Courage 1-0 in the finals.
