Former Iowa State coaching legend Harold Nichols led the Cyclones wrestling team as its head coach from 1954 to 1985. Nichols and his achievements as the former head coach at Iowa State greatly influenced the future of NCAA wrestling. The Cyclones amassed a 492-93-14 record under Nichols. Iowa State won six national NCAA team titles, took second 11 times, and third nine times. Nichols also coached wrestlers to 38 NCAA individual titles, including NCAA and Olympic champion Dan Gable. Gable eventually would lead the rival Iowa Hawkeyes to NCAA dominance after completing his outstanding wrestling career for the Cyclones. Which years did Iowa State win NCAA team titles?Iowa State won its first NCAA team title in 1933. It won its first under Nichols in 1965. Others followed in 1969, 1970 1972, 1973 and 1977. The Cyclones won another NCAA team title in 1987 under then-coach and former Iowa State wrestler Jim Gibbons.

Gable famously won the gold medal for freestyle wrestling without surrendering a single point throughout the competition during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Peterson also won a gold medal during the 1972 Olympics and earned a silver four years later in Montreal. Former Cyclone wrestler and coach Kevin Jackson won a gold medal during the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
