The Iowa State Cyclones wrestling team is among the first dominant programs in NCAA wrestling history. Former Iowa State coaching legend Harold Nichols led the Cyclones wrestling team as its head coach from 1954 to 1985. Nichols and his achievements as the former head coach at Iowa State greatly influenced the future of NCAA wrestling. The Cyclones amassed a 492-93-14 record under Nichols. Iowa State won six national NCAA team titles, took second 11 times, and third nine times. Nichols also coached wrestlers to 38 NCAA individual titles, including NCAA and Olympic champion Dan Gable. Gable eventually would lead the rival Iowa Hawkeyes to NCAA dominance after completing his outstanding wrestling career for the Cyclones.
