Southern California's Verizon Wireless Amphitheater/Irvine Meadows first opened in 1981 and has long been one of the most popular outdoor music venues in the area. Although these days it is referred to as the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, most locals still call the venue by its original name, Irvine Meadows. The amphitheater is the biggest outdoor theater in Orange County and annually draws in some of the best musical acts in the world. Sadly for those who have come to love Irvine Meadows the venue's lease is up in 2017 and the City of Irvine has said it will not renew the lease and will instead plan on developing apartment buildings on the land.
If you are looking for some of the best concerts in Southern California look no further than the historic and gorgeous outdoor venue of Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, also known as Irvine Meadows. Many of the biggest bands in the world have played at the venue including the Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Oingo Boingo, Social Distortion, The Offspring, Michale Jackson, Pennywise, X, and more. Big time festivals have been held at the venue including Lollapalooza, Lillith Fair, Projekt Revolution, Uproar Festival, and others. The venue is annually home to the KROQ Weenie Roast, a festival put on by the influential Los Angeles alternative rock station.
Irvine Meadows is located in Irvine, California just down the freeway from Los Angeles. As the city in California with the highest population, and the second most populous city in the United States, you can be sure that there are plenty of reasons to visit Los Angeles. You would be remiss not to visit the beach whether it is Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu, or any of the other nearby beaches. A trip to Hollywood Boulevard will allow you to go along the Walk of Fame and see the names some of your favorite stars of film, television, radio, and music before you stop by Grauman's Chinese Theater and see where the biggest stars in the history of showbiz have put their hand prints in the cement. If you are looking for something more high brow head over to the J. Paul Getty Museum and see some of the world famous art hanging from its walls.
Irvine Meadows seats 16,805 guests and offers two different types of seating, reserved or lawn. Reserved seating allows patrons to sit closer to the stage in actual seats while costing a little more, and lawn seating is general admission but allows guests the opportunity to move around more and possibly to stretch out a little more during the performance although they are a little further away from the stage.
Legendary alternative rock band Oingo Boingo played an annual Halloween show at Irvine Meadows while Michael Jackson played three straight sold out shows during his Bad Tour in 1988. The Grateful Dead played fifteen shows at the venue during their historic career.
