J Boog was born Jarell Damonté Houston in Compton, Calif., in 1985. He's the son of a Samoan chief. He has been singing, dancing and rapping since he was two years old. He later went on to release an EP, Night Life, with Lil' Fizz as well as four studio albums. Besides his work as a solo artist, J Boog is also a member of B2K, an R&B group, along with Lil' Fizz, Omarion and Raz-B. J Boog has received two Grammy nominations, both for Best Reggae Album: in 2016 for Rose Petals and in 2017 for Wash House Ting.
In addition to singing and rapping, J Boog - also known as BooGiE, BooG, J-BooG and Rell - is also a songwriter, dancer, actor, record producer and movie producer. As an actor or member of the production crew, he's worked on at least eight films, including You Got Served and Steppin: The Movie. He has also appeared in four TV shows, including All That, 106 and Park and Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood. In 2016, he played Lawrence in the stage play Man of the House. As a musician, J Boog toured the US, Japan, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Dubai.
