Featuring other well-known artists, such as Stormzy and Ghetts, the single reached a high of number nine in the UK singles charts, making J Hus’ name as a serious performer. Based in Stratford in East London, J Hus has been performing music since 2013. An afro-beat and grime artist, the vocalist has been signed to both the Black Butter label as well as Epic, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
J Hus' career milestones
According to J Hus, he got interested in rap music as a boy growing up in Stratford, close to the Olympic Park development in that part of London. As a kid, he was a fan of the rapping of 50 Cent. Two friends persuaded the young grime artist as a teenager to go professional. They formed a management company, a business known as 2K Management, to look after J Hus’ interests.
A freestyle artist in his early days, J Hus put much of his early music online for public consumption. With an ear for a good backbeat that would suit his style of rapping, early recordings used samples from the likes of “Don’t Panic” by French Montana. Soon, J Hus was moving into an afro-beat and grime sound. In the spring of 2015, the rapper released an EP named the Westwood Crib Sessions, with MoStack. A new song, uploaded in May of 2015 and called “Lean and Bop”, ended up being streamed several million times on social media sites. A couple of months later, J Hus was attacked and ended up being hospitalised for a time.
In 2016, two singles were put out by the rapper. “Friendly” was followed by “Playing Sports” but both tracks failed to make an impact in the UK charts. After teaming up with Santan Dave, the South London rapper, J Hus achieved a minor hit with “Samantha”, a single from early 2017. The artist then followed this up with the aforementioned “Did You See”, which not only got into the top 10 in the UK, but reached number four in the R 'n' B charts.
“Did You See” was a promotional single for J Hus’ forthcoming debut LP. This album was released in May of 2017 and was made available on CD as well as for digital download. Much of the production of the album was carried out by JAE5, and it mixed hip-hop with dancehall styles as well as R 'n' B. The LP got to number one in the UK R 'n' B charts and reached number six in the main album charts.
