Jane Fonda background
Born in New York City, Fonda is the daughter of Hollywood legend Henry Fonda. Her brother, Peter, and niece, Bridget, are also actors. Fonda attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, working intermittently as a model and appearing twice in Vogue. During the late 1950s, Fonda established herself in the New York City theater scene. In 1960, she made her proper debut in the Broadway show There Was a Little Girl. The role earned Fonda her first Tony nomination. Fonda made her film debut later the same year in Tall Story. Fonda proved extraordinarily fruitful during the 1960s, churning out roughly two movies annually. In 1968, she played the title role in the sci-fi spoof Barbarella, which established her as a bona fide sex symbol. Her first Academy Award nomination came in 1969 for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Fonda began to enjoy elite status as a world respected A-list actor by the '70s. Her opposition to the Vietnam War stirred controversy, and when she was photographed atop an anti-aircraft gun in North Vietnam, she earned the nickname "Hanoi Jane." She continued to star in critically acclaimed movies, such as 9 to 5, On Golden Pond (alongside her father and Katharine Hepburn) and Agnes of God. Throughout the '80s and '90s, Fonda continued to make movies. At the same time, she redefined herself as a fitness guru, producing many successful exercise books and videos.
