A talented pianist and composer, Jason Moran destroys outdated jazz music stereotypes while still paying homage to the genre's greatest artists. He enjoys collaborating with fellow jazz musicians, including Robert Glasper, Ravi Coltrane, Mary Halvorson and the Charles Lloyd New Quartet. The songs he records and performs vary wildly but all feature an elegant yet quirky take on the evolving jazz genre.
Jason Moran's beginnings and breakthrough
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Jason Moran developed his musical talent at Yelena Kurinets' music school, which employed the Suzuki method to great effect. He was heavily influenced by his father's music collection, which included a wide range of genres and artists.
Moran held an early preference for hip-hop music but began exploring jazz as a teenager. This led him to the jazz program headed by Robert Morgan at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston. He later attended and graduated from the acclaimed Manhattan School of Music. This led to his first European tour alongside Greg Osby. Following a successful stint with Osby, Moran signed a contract with Blue Note.
Jason Moran albums
Moran's debut album, Soundtrack to Human Motion, received great critical acclaim in the jazz world, with admirers showing the most enthusiasm for the album's solo, Kinesics. He followed this impressive debut with sophomore release, Facing Left, featuring a trio known as The Bandwagon. This group expanded and developed Black Stars, which was later named one of NPR's 50 Most Important Recordings of the Decade.
Returning to solo work, Moran released Modernistic and, later, Same Mother. His notable album, Artist in Residence, featured several works commissioned by influential museums. He received extensive critical acclaim for the album Ten and for the Fats Waller tribute, All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller. His release BANGS featured trumpeter Ron Miles and guitarist Mary Halvorson.
Jason Moran world tour
Jason Moran has toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe. A typical Jason Moran tour includes collaborations with several of the pianist's favorite jazz musicians, although he can hold his own as a solo artist. He appears regularly at international events, such as Berlin's JazzFest, the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Belgrade Jazz Festival.
Whether appearing at international festivals or in intimate settings, Jason Moran always aims to instill a personal touch into his performances. A theatrical performer, he enjoys featuring actors and dancers alongside fellow musicians. He believes that this visual element makes his performances more enjoyable for audience members. Although jazz is his forte, he infuses his music with elements of several other genres including, most notably, blues and gospel.
