How did this basketball classic get its name?The tournament is named in honor of Jerry Colangelo. Throughout his career, Colangelo has made a significant mark by working as an NBA executive, including stints working as a general manager, president and even briefly the coach of the Phoenix Suns. During Colangelo's tenure, the Phoenix Suns made the NBA finals two times, including in 1993 with Charles Barkley. Jerry Colangelo has been named NBA's Executive of the Year multiple times, including in 1977, 1982, 1990 and 1994. Colangelo has been a pivotal part of the Phoenix professional sports team landscape. He's responsible for the presence of not only the Phoenix Suns in the metro, but also for the NHL Phoenix Coyotes, MLB Arizona Diamondbacks, WNBA Phoenix Mercury and the Arena League's Arizona Rattlers.

Who were some notable coaches leading teams into the Jerry Colangelo Classic?There were several notable coaches involved with the teams playing in this event. Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay grew up locally in the Phoenix area, where he was a Mesa Westwood High School athlete. In 2018, Liberty University had its strongest season yet, earning a 29-7 record and winning its first NCAA Tournament game when they bested Mississippi State during the first round of play. Interestingly, Saint Mary's College is coached by Randy Bennett, who is also an alum of Westwood High School. Bennett is the son of former Mesa Community College head coach Tom Bennett.
