About Jesus Christ Superstar
Originally a rock opera debuting in 1970, this award-winning adaptation hit Broadway in 1971, with music by the infamous Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. With many tours around the world, Jesus Christ Superstar can be considered an instant Broadway classic, an extraordinarily successful musical and show that’s been shocking audiences for over 40 years.
The story follows Judas Iscariot and Jesus Christ as they navigate through psychological, dogmatic and personal struggles. Most of the musical follows Judas and his disappointment, frustration and disillusionment with how Jesus is handling his disciples. Unlike ever before, audiences will see through Judas’ eyes, bringing them closer to understanding why he committed the treasonous act he did.
This rock spectacle is not only one of the highest grossing and longest running West End productions in history, but also one of the most treasured, unusual and interesting tales on Broadway.
Cast and Music
Since its inception, Jesus Christ Superstar has starred many talented and capable artists. The original Broadway production featured Jeff Fenholt as Jesus, Ben Vereen as Judas, Bob Bingham as Caiaphas and Kur Yaghjian as Annas. Ben Vereen was nominated for a Tony Award for his portrayal of Judas.
In 2012, there was a public television competition show called Superstar, which searched for the next Jesus. In the UK, Ben Forster was chosen and began arena touring in late September of that year. Additionally, it starred Tim Minchin as Judas and Melanie C. as Mary Magdalene.
With brilliant casting since 1970, the music and lyrics remain the heart and soul of Jesus Christ Superstar. As Webber’s first official Broadway musical, he was awarded Most Promising Composer. Tim Rice, who has been with Webber for his entire career, also got his rise to fame with this musical.
