Swing, and all that jazz!
Founded in 1988 with David Beger holding the conductor’s baton, the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra (JLCO) were formed as a follow up to a Classical Jazz concert series. Sensing a need to spread the genre to new audiences, Wynton Marsalis took over as artistic director in 1991. Wynton introduced a focus on the works of the renowned composer and performer jazz King, Duke Ellington himself. Placing a heavy emphasis on preserving and acting as an ambassador for the history of jazz, JLCO have since released several albums and toured in front of worldwide audiences. In 1997, JLCO recorded the incredible album ‘Blood on the Fields’, released under the Columbia record label. The composition tells the journey of a young couple released from slavery and won the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Keen to inspire young audiences, the JLCO have designed a series of education programmes to spark that addictive jazz flame! As with all jazz events, the improvised jazz sound means that no two shows are ever the same and so performances by JLCO are no exception. Guest musicians from around the world of jazz can be invited to perform with the troupe, to the delight of their watching audiences. Give your ears a treat, buy JLCO tickets with StubHub today!
