To some, Joe Nichols might look more at home on a football field than a concert stage. Standing well over six feet tall with a broad jawline and shoulders that strain his signature black t-shirts, everything about him bespeaks raw athleticism. But after catching a glimpse of his devil-may-care grin, it's easy to see that showmanship is in the country music star's blood.
Joe Nichols' musical heritage started with his father, a trucker who moonlighted as a bassist for several Arkansas-based country bands. Nichols signed a record deal at age 19, but his career started with a whimper rather than a bang, his self-titled debut failing to produce any significant singles or sales numbers. His label promptly dropped him, and he turned various menial jobs to support himself. "That country life, that can be hard as hell sometimes," he told Rolling Stone in 2015. "You make those vows: 'I'll do whatever it takes to get out of this hell hole,' you know?" That kind of self-belief paid off for Nichols. "The Impossible" off of his sophomore effort, Man With a Memory, cracked the top three on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart and landed in the top-10 most-played country songs for 2003.
Success has dogged Joe Nichols ever since. A reissue of his debut album netted him his first No. 1 single with "Brokenheartsville," and he followed it up with the double entendre-riddled "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off." Though more than a few critics panned its cheeky rhymes, the tune dominated country radio, not only making it Nichols' best-known song, but also propelling his album III to gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. "Gimmie That Girl" from Old Things New netted him yet another top hit.
Nichols is known primarily as a vocalist who has sunk his roots deep into old-time country and even counted the legendary Merle Haggard a personal friend. "I remember listening to his records, trying to mimic his voice as a six year old," he said during an interview at the Stagecoach Music Festival. Still, Nichols has shown an impressive musical versatility over his career, easily straddling both old and new divides in the genre. The melancholy, modern rock-influenced "Sunny and 75" from 2013's Crickets became Nichol's best performing radio single at that point in time, and he earned kudos from fans and critics alike when he performed Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back" alongside classics from Hank Williams Jr. at the 2016 Country Jam in Colorado. In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, he also praised the songwriting chops of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Lady Gaga, surprising influences for a country star. His steady touring schedule over the years has taken him to noteworthy venues and festivals such as the Mayo Performing Arts Center, Farmborough Festival, Goodyear Theater, and Florida Strawberry Festival.
Fans with Joe Nichols tickets might also enjoy performances by Josh Turner, Billy Currington, or Jason Aldean.
