Since the inception of his orchestra in 1994, conductor John Wilson has gone on to prominence as an accessible and entertaining proponent of the big band and orchestral repertoire. The John Wilson Orchestra performs a mixture of material from Tin Palley Alley and MGM musicals, the operettas of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the associated repertoire from composers including Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Andre Previn. Their exceedingly entertaining shows are a staple of BBC Proms. To truly experience this orchestra, one must see them live.
John Wilson and his Orchestra will go on a major tour across the United Kingdom this summer. John Wilson tickets are available for multiple performances at the famed Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as concerts at Town Hall in Leeds, the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, Brighton Dome in Brighton, Sage Gateshead in Gateshead Quays, St. David's Hall in Cardiff, and the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.
The John Wilson Orchestra play material from Rodgers and Hammerstein classics such as Show Boat, The Sound of Music, and The King and I - shows that are often credited with creating the modern conception of the musical. Before Rodgers and Hammerstein, most so-called musicals were revues tinged with an ugly history of racism; shows were often excuses for partial nudity or circus entertainment where the music was peripheral. Rodgers and Hammerstein introduced moral complexity and larger musical structures into the form, while managing to write melodies that were catchier than any predecessors and weaving them into highly entertaining stories.
The John Wilson Orchestra is dedicated to "authentic period performance" of the scores from the great MGM musicals, as well as the Rodgers and Hammerstein songbook. They perform annually at the BBC Proms with the tag line, "Technicolour for the ears." They achieved acclaim in 2012 for their full rendition of the music from "My Fair Lady," with music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. To achieve their full sound, the group's arrangement is similar to the classic Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, with a full complement of French horns, tubas, trombones, and trumpets, and a sizable percussion section. In addition to performing songbook material, the orchestra also records contemporary Hollywood film scores, including the 2006 movie The Gathering Storm.
John Wilson achieved national prominence in 2007 with two concurrent achievements: he was nominated for the Royal Philharmonic Society's Conductor Award, and the John Wilson Orchestra was invited to perform at the BBC Proms for the first time. This nationally televised performance led to major acclaim and brought the Orchestra to the attention of a much larger audience.
John Wilson's releases include a mixture of themed compilations, soundtrack albums, and musical repertoire. Notable albums include Soft Lights and Sweet Music - Classic Angela Morley Arrangements, the original motion picture soundtrack to Beyond the Sea, and That's Entertainment: A Celebration of the MGM Movie Musical.
John Wilson and his Orchestra generally perform at seated concert halls in prestigious classical venues. Their performances are rousing entertainment. It's a rare treat to hear this sumptuous music performed live by an orchestra of more than sixty members.
