Joni Mitchell background
Joni began her career in Canada in the late '60s, singing in folk clubs. She moved to the US when she married her husband, and the two began performing together in clubs in Michigan. Her marriage dissolved, which moved her to New York and forced her into a solo career. She made a name for herself by singing and writing her own materials, showcasing them all along the East Coast. Most of her early success is attributed to her songwriting and her songs being sold and sung by artists such as Judy Collins. When Mitchell was playing a venue in California, David Crosby heard her and introduced her to his musician friends; she was picked up by recording studio Reprise Records. From there, her career took off, and she went on to record many studio albums and tour worldwide.
