Based on his 2017 memoir Becoming Kareem: Growing Up On and Off the Court, the talk will touch on his career, his childhood experiences and the influence of his mentors, including John Wooden, Jack Donahue, Muhammad Ali and his parents.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor in 1947, is best known for his prolific 20-year NBA career as a center on the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers, for which he won six NBA championships. At the time of his retirement, he had accumulated more points, blocks, defensive rebounds and field goals than anyone else in NBA history. In college, Abdul-Jabbar played at UCLA under legendary coach John Wooden and was a member of three NCAA championship teams. In addition to his basketball career, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is also a prolific actor. He has appeared in more than 30 TV shows and films, including Airplane! and the Bruce Lee movie Game of Death. A thoughtful writer, Abdul-Jabbar has written more than a dozen books and memoirs since 1983. His columns have appeared in major magazine and newspapers such as Time and the Guardian.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar built one of the most storied careers in the history of basketball. Entering the NBA in 1970, he won a record six NBA MVPs and appeared in a record 19 NBA All-Star games. Additionally, he was a 15-time All-NBA pick and an 11-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. He was also named Rookie of the Year. Abdul-Jabbar entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. As recognition of his success, the NBA named him as one of the 50 greatest players of all time. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
