Few artists have reshaped Latin music like Karol G, the Medellín-born singer who turned a label's doubt into a record-breaking career. Born Carolina Giraldo Navarro in 1991, she sang on El Factor X, Colombia's spinoff of The X Factor, at age 14, posted covers of Alicia Keys and Lauryn Hill to YouTube as a teen, and studied music at the University of Antioquia while singing backup for established acts. When a major label passed on her, doubting a woman could carry reggaeton, she and her father promoted her music independently across colleges, clubs, and festivals in Colombia. A 2014 move to New York to study music business sharpened her focus, and in 2016 she signed with Universal Music Latino.
The breakthrough arrived in 2017 with "Ahora Me Llama," a duet with Bad Bunny whose video cleared a billion YouTube views and established Karol G as a standout of the global pop urbano wave. Her debut album, Unstoppable, followed that October and debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart, earning recognition as the first solid entry by a woman in the Latin trap movement. The hits compounded from there: "Secreto" with Anuel AA, "China," which assembled Daddy Yankee, Ozuna, J Balvin, and Anuel AA on one track and piled up a billion views of its own, and "Tusa" with Nicki Minaj, a No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs certified 28× Latin platinum by the RIAA. The albums Ocean (2019) and KG0516 (2021) kept the run going, with KG0516 topping the US Latin albums chart.
The milestones since have been historic. In 2023, Mañana Será Bonito became the first Spanish-language album by a female artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while "TQG," her collaboration with Shakira, became her highest-charting single on the Hot 100 at No. 7. In early 2024 she became the first woman to win the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album, and in 2026 she topped the Coachella bill as the first Latin woman ever to headline the festival. Tropicoqueta, released in 2025, dug into Colombian genres like cumbia, vallenato, and salsa. Her headlining résumé spans the Bichota Tour, the Strip Love Tour, and the Mañana Será Bonito Tour, along with a set at Chile's Viña del Mar International Song Festival in front of more than 15,000 fans. That range, from trap anthems to traditional Colombian rhythms, is a big part of why Karol G tickets draw fans from every corner of Latin music.
