When is the Kentucky Three Day Event?The 2020 Kentucky Three Day Event runs from Thursday, April 23, to Sunday, April 26. Eventing is intended as a three-day competition. Dressage is held on the first day, cross-country on the second and stadium jumping on the third. The Kentucky Three Day Event draws so many competitors, it has to split the dressage round into two days. The event averages 50 entries in the dressage category, each of which requires around five minutes to complete their round. Organizers say fans enjoy the four-day format as it keeps an unhurried pace and provides time to enjoy the event and the Lexington area.
How is the competition in the Kentucky Three Day Event?The Kentucky Three Day Event draws some of the finest horses and riders in the world. It is one of just four events included in the "Grand Slam of Eventing." A rider who wins Kentucky, Mitsubishi Motors Badminton and Land Rover Burghley Four-Star Events in succession wins a $350,000 grand prize.
Where is the Kentucky Three Day Event held?Kentucky Horse Park is the only theme park in America dedicated to horses. It sits on a 9,000-acre tract of land originally deeded in 1,777. After a long history as a family horse estate, the Commonwealth of Kentucky purchased the property in 1978 and established the Kentucky Horse Park. The Kentucky Three Day Event began that same year in the new facility.
Who won the 2019 Kentucky Three Day Event?Oliver Townend of Great Britain won his second straight Kentucky Three Day Event in 2019. Boyd Martin of the US finished second. Both riders achieved a perfect score in the show jumping category. Townend is just the fourth competitor to win the Kentucky Three Day Event twice in a row. He joins American Bruce Davidson, who won the first Kentucky Three Day Event in 1978. Riders Kim Severson and Michael Jung have also won back-to-back Kentucky Three Day Events.
Who operates the Kentucky Three Day Event?The Kentucky Three Day Event schedule is organized by Equestrian Events, Inc.(EEI), a nonprofit organization. EEI was formed in 1976 for the purpose of staging the equestrian World Championships in 1978. The success of the initial Three Day Event turned the competition into an annual event that has endured ever since. Along with sponsor Land Rover, the Kentucky Three Day Event supports the work of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, which funds medical equine research.
