About Kindred the Family Soul
At times shortened to just Kindred, Kindred the Family Soul has been an unbeatable R&B, neo soul and jazz husband wife duo that has been on the music scene for nearly thirteen years. Made up of Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler, the band hails from the city of brotherly love Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they helped grow and develop the inchoate Philly neo soul music scene that has since become a national musical sensation. The band would be discovered by none other than famed musician Jill Scott, the Emmy award winning soul crooner famously featured on the 2006 mega hit "Daydreaming", alongside Lupe Fiasco. Once Jill Scott saw Kindred's musical magic live, she helped the couple get signed to Hidden Beach Records, effectively putting Kindred into the limelight as ambassadors of the Philly neo soul movement.
Despite a striking track record as great live performers, the band wouldn't put out their full length debut until 2003, a huge hit within the contemporary R&B and jazz communities that paved the path for a sophomore follow up just two years later. In between, the band would would head to the coveted Soul Train Music Awards, the Grammys of soul and jazz music, gaining a nomination for Best Album for a Duo shortly before heading to the BET Awards for their second major award nod in as many years. Since the, band has put out an additional three full length recordings, with their entire discography clocking in at five full length records that have solidified Kindred's positions as the foremost neo soul performers on the planet today.
The band's debut, Surrender to Love, would drop in 2003 and be a key piece to the Kindred hype machine that would continues to grow and build today. The album, produced after being scouted by legendary vocalist Jill Scott, would spawn two major hits that have sense integrated themselves into soul and R&B Americana. 2003's "Far Away" would climb to the #53 position on the US R&B Charts, while the album's second single "Stars" would hit the #101 position.
The duo's followup In This Life Together would live up to high expectations, with three singles being released on the album that would climb all over the music charts. The band's first single, 2006's "Where Would I Be (The Question)" would be their biggest hit to date at the time, climbing to #41 on Billboard's US R&B charts and hitting the #1 position on the radio waves, becoming one of the most recurring tracks to be played in 2006.
The band's discovery would come in 2002, while playing the Black Lily Film & Music Festival. The band would occupy an early opening slot at the time, but within two years time would be receiving top billing at jazz and soul events all across North America.
