A thrilling play full of superb performances
After serving 7 years in prison, Elmore, aka King Hedley II, played by Lenny Henry, attempts to rebuild his life and provide for his family. Set in downtrodden 1980s Pittsburgh during the Reagan Presidency, Hedley longs to ‘go straight’, his dream is to open a video store and he attempts this through selling fridges alongside his inept friend Mister played by Dexter Flanders. Lenny Henry is a national treasure, well known to British audiences for his range of comedic performances, including on his very own TV sketch vehicle, "Lenny Henry In Pieces", which aired on BBC One between 2000-2003. He also guest starred in 2004’s "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". Henry has fantastic stage pedigree, having appeared as "Othello" in the 2009 production of the play of the same name. King Hedley II was written by August Wilson - a critical voice in African American discourse. August is recognised for his tense stories of black America, including "The Pittsburgh Cycle", a series of ten plays each set within a different decade of the 20th Century, which won him two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama – one for "Fences" (1985) and one for "The Piano Lesson" (1990).
