L’Italiana in Algeri
L’Italiana in Algeri is an opera with music composed by Giochino Rossini from a libretto by Angelo Anelli.
The opera is an exuberant comic farce telling the misadventures of an Italian girl in Algiers. The score is a “brilliant convergence of giddy madness and creative sophistication” and is obviously a product of “youthful vitality and charming irreverence.” Rossini was a mere 21 years old when he wrote this opera.
L’Italiana in Algeri premiered in Teatro San Benedetto in Venice, Italy in May 1813. It was an instant success. Rossini composed the opera in just a few weeks, though he continued to tinker with the score over the next couple of years. It continues to be one of Rossini’s most popular operas and continues to perform around the world.
Giochino Rossini (1792-1868) was a composer. He wrote some 39 operas before he was 38 years old, at which point he retired from opera almost completely. His most famous and well-known work is Il barbiere di Siviglia, known in English as The Barber of Seville. However, just a piece of his vast output has likely been heard and hummed by nearly every American from the mid-20th century on, as The Lone Ranger appropriated a portion of his “William Tell Overture” for the opening theme of the program.
At his retirement in 1828, he was considered the most popular opera composer in history.
Angelo Anelli (1761-1820) was a poet and an opera librettist, though he was also involved in politics and law. A libretto he wrote for Stefano Pavesi’s opera Ser Marcantonio later became the basis for Gaetano Donizetti’s famous opera Don Pasquale.
