The legend of La Traviata
La Traviata is a three-act opera largely based on the 1852 play "La Dame aux camélias", an adaptation from a novel by Alexandre Dumas fils. The story follows Violetta Valéry, a courtesan in 19th century Paris, and her troubled love affair with Alfredo Germont. Verdi’s incredible composition intimately follows Violetta’s changing fortunes and the lyrics are tenderly written to move with the emotions of the piece. The only one of Verdi’s numerous operas to be set entirely indoors, La Traviata can be seen as a study of society’s judgmental nature and its consequences. The title itself translates to "The Fallen Woman", in relation to Violetta, a heroine who attracts both compassion and admiration and has fascinated audiences for decades. It has not only been the figure of Violetta that has kept audiences coming back to La Traviata, but also the depiction of Paris’ high society with all its glitz, glamour and injustices.
