The Lakers is a Division I hockey team, putting it in the elite ranks of NCAA college hockey. Also, the team belongs to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, a men’s collegiate hockey conference that includes teams from the Midwestern United States, Alaska and Alabama. The Lakers have a long and proud history of excellence which includes three NCAA Championships won in 1988, 1992 and 1994. Though the team as yet has not won any WCHA tournaments, it was able to achieve considerable success in its previous conference, the now defunct Central Collegiate Hockey Association, winning a total of four CCHA tournaments. Throughout the season from October 2019 to February 2020, the Lakers have played, on average, two back-to-back games each week.
